FTA Decision No. 13 of 2026
Supplier TRN Verification in the UAE: Protect Your Input VAT
You can only recover input VAT when the VAT was properly charged, and properly charged starts with a properly registered supplier. FTA Decision No. 13 of 2026, effective 1 October 2026, requires taxable persons to verify the validity and integrity of their suppliers and supplies before deducting input VAT. This is a full Know-Your-Supplier regime under Article 54(bis) of the VAT law: supplier identity checks, a documented internal verification policy with a named compliance officer, and transaction-level checks. Verifying each supplier's TRN on the FTA portal is a practical part of that verification, not the whole of it. This guide explains what the Decision requires, how to check a TRN on the FTA portal in about two minutes, and the accounts-payable process that keeps your input VAT safe.
The rule
Supplier TRN verification in four parts
What FTA Decision No. 13 of 2026 (effective 1 October 2026) asks your business to do.
Check the TRN before you claim
Verification happens when a supplier is onboarded and periodically after that, not when the FTA comes knocking. Build it into procurement so it happens by default.
The invoice must carry a valid TRN
A VAT invoice without a valid supplier TRN is not a valid VAT invoice for recovery purposes. No TRN on the document means no input VAT claim, however genuine the purchase.
No registration, no recovery
If the supplier was never VAT-registered, the VAT they charged cannot be recovered as input VAT, even if you paid it in good faith. The cost lands on you, not them.
Keep your proof
Save a screenshot or export of each verification with a date. If the FTA queries an input VAT claim, dated evidence that you checked is your defence.
The decision's fine print is still worth reading on tax.gov.ae as implementation guidance develops. Our new VAT rules guide tracks related changes in one place.
Two-minute check
How to check a TRN on the FTA portal
The FTA publishes a TRN verification tool on its portal. The whole check takes about two minutes per supplier.
- Open the FTA portal at tax.gov.ae and find the TRN verification service.
- Enter the supplier's 15-digit TRN exactly as shown on their invoice.
- Confirm the legal name matches the name on the invoice and your supplier record. A valid number with the wrong name is a red flag, not a pass.
- Save dated evidence of the check: screenshot or PDF export, filed with the supplier record.
- Repeat periodically, at least for key suppliers. Registrations get cancelled and amended; a check from last year proves nothing about today.
Damage control
Claimed VAT from an unregistered supplier? Fix it fast
Finding the problem yourself is good news: it means you can fix it on your terms instead of the FTA's. Here is the order of operations.
- Quantify it first: which periods, which suppliers, how much input VAT is affected. You cannot disclose what you have not measured.
- Talk to the supplier: genuine suppliers fix their registration or reissue proper documents. Suppliers who disappear tell you everything about the invoice.
- Disclose voluntarily within 20 business days of discovering the error, as the voluntary disclosure rules require. Waiting for an audit never reduces the outcome.
- Expect the VAT back plus penalties under the published schedule. Budget for both before you file the disclosure.
- Close the hole going forward: no TRN on the invoice means no input VAT claim. Make it a system rule, not a judgment call.
For AP teams

One setup pass, then it runs itself. This is the process we recommend to clients.
Supplier TRN verification process for accounts payable
| When | Action | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| New supplier onboarding | Collect the TRN on the supplier form and verify it on the FTA portal before the first purchase order | Procurement |
| First invoice received | Match invoice TRN and legal name against the verified supplier record | AP clerk |
| Quarterly | Re-verify TRNs for top suppliers by spend; sample the rest | AP lead |
| Verification fails | Hold the input VAT claim, query the supplier, escalate after 7 days without resolution | Finance manager |
| Month end | Review the exception log; no unresolved TRN failures carry into the VAT return | Finance manager |

Avoid these
Six ways businesses get this wrong
Every one of these has cost a real business real input VAT.
Trusting big suppliers blindly
Size is not registration. Even established vendors change entities, let registrations lapse, or bill from an unregistered branch. Check everyone.
Checking once, never again
A TRN that was valid in 2024 can be cancelled in 2026. Periodic re-checks are the whole point of the requirement.
Matching the number, not the name
The portal check has two halves: the number is valid, and it belongs to the legal entity on your invoice. Skipping the name match misses cloned and mistyped TRNs.
Claiming VAT on proforma invoices
Quotes and proformas are not tax invoices. Input VAT needs a proper tax invoice with a valid TRN, full stop.
Keeping no evidence of checks
"We checked it" without a dated screenshot is just a story. The FTA asks for documents, and your future self will thank you.
Letting procurement skip finance
When purchasing onboards suppliers without finance in the loop, TRN collection never happens. One shared onboarding form fixes it.
The one-page summary
Supplier TRN verification on one page
If you remember nothing else, remember this
- Verify every supplier's TRN on the FTA portal at onboarding and periodically after.
- Match the legal name, not just the number, against the invoice.
- No valid TRN means no input VAT recovery, even if you paid the VAT in good faith.
- Save dated evidence of every check with the supplier record.
- Fix past errors through voluntary disclosure within 20 business days of discovering them.
- Build it into AP: onboarding form, invoice matching rule, quarterly re-checks, month-end exception review.
Your next three moves
What to do this week
- Pull your top 20 suppliers by spend and run their TRNs through the FTA portal. Two hours of work that can save five figures.
- Add a TRN field to your supplier onboarding form so every new supplier is verified before the first order.
- Write the invoice rule down: no valid supplier TRN and matching legal name, no input VAT claim. Share it with AP and procurement.
- Review last quarter's return for input VAT claimed against suppliers you have never verified. Anything doubtful gets disclosed, not hoped away.
FAQs
Questions, answered
What is supplier TRN verification?
It means confirming that a supplier's Tax Registration Number is valid on the FTA portal, and that it belongs to the legal entity named on the invoice, before you recover input VAT on their invoices.
Is TRN verification mandatory in the UAE?
Yes. FTA Decision No. 13 of 2026, effective 1 October 2026, requires taxable persons to verify the validity and integrity of their suppliers and supplies before deducting input VAT: a full Know-Your-Supplier regime under Article 54(bis) of the VAT law, with supplier identity checks, a documented internal verification policy with a named compliance officer, and transaction-level checks. TRN verification on the FTA portal is one practical part of that regime, not the whole of it. Because implementation guidance can evolve, confirm the current position on tax.gov.ae or with your tax agent before relying on any single date.
How do I check a supplier's TRN?
Use the TRN verification tool on the FTA portal at tax.gov.ae: enter the 15-digit TRN from the invoice and confirm the legal name it returns matches the name on the invoice and in your supplier records. Save a dated screenshot of each check.
What if my supplier is not VAT registered?
Then you cannot recover input VAT on their invoices, even if they charged you VAT in good faith. Either the supplier registers and issues proper tax invoices, or you treat the VAT as an irrecoverable cost and price accordingly.
What if I already claimed VAT from an unregistered supplier?
Measure which periods and amounts are affected, then correct through voluntary disclosure within 20 business days of discovering the error, as the rules require. Expect the disallowed VAT plus penalties under the published schedule, which is still cheaper than being caught in an audit.
How often should we re-check supplier TRNs?
Verify at onboarding as a minimum, then re-check periodically. Quarterly re-verification for your top suppliers by spend, plus a rolling sample of the rest, is a sensible rhythm for most businesses.
Do the checks change with the size of the supply?
Supplies below AED 10,000 (excluding VAT) may skip the checks unless 12-month dealings with that supplier exceed AED 100,000. Above AED 375,000 in 12 months, you also need written bank confirmation from a UAE-authorised bank.
