UAE VAT Return Form, Explained Box by Box
The EmaraTax VAT return looks simple until you reach the boxes. Standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt, reverse charge, imports, adjustments, each figure has exactly one correct home. Put a number in the wrong box and the return is wrong even when the maths is right. Here is what every box means.
The return, decoded
What each box means
The EmaraTax VAT return organises your activity into boxes. Here is the plain-English version of what belongs in each one.
Standard-rated supplies
Your normal 5% sales in the UAE. This is where most of your output VAT lives. Include the full selling value before VAT.
Zero-rated supplies
Exports, international transport and other zero-rated supplies. Report the value here, VAT is nil, but the FTA still wants to see the turnover.
Exempt supplies
Residential rent, bare land, local passenger transport and similar exempt items. No VAT charged and, importantly, no input VAT recovery on related costs.
Reverse charge
Imports of services and goods where you account for the VAT yourself. You declare the output VAT and claim the input VAT in the same return, often netting to zero.
Imports
Goods imported into the UAE. Customs data feeds into this, and the figures must reconcile with your import declarations or questions follow.
Adjustments
Corrections to earlier periods, bad debt relief, and credit notes. Use these instead of editing a filed return, which you cannot do directly.
Deadlines that matter
Filing rhythm and nil returns
Most businesses file quarterly, with the return and payment due within 28 days of the period end. Businesses with turnover above AED 150 million file monthly. The deadline is the same whether you owe money or not.
Had a quiet quarter with no sales? You still file, a nil return. Skipping it counts as late filing and attracts the same AED 1,000 penalty. Set a calendar reminder for the 28th day after each period end, or better, let your accountant own the calendar. Our VAT services include deadline tracking so this never slips.
Errors we fix
The filing mistakes that trigger notices
Three errors cause most FTA queries: putting zero-rated sales in the exempt box (which kills input VAT recovery), forgetting reverse charge on imported services, and reporting customs import values that do not match the actual declarations.
- Wrong box for zero-rated vs exempt supplies
- Missing reverse charge on foreign service invoices
- Import values not matching customs data
- Claiming input VAT without a valid tax invoice
- Filing late even when nothing is owed

Behind the scenes
What the FTA cross-checks
Your return does not exist in isolation. The FTA's systems automatically compare your figures against customs import data, your corporate tax filings, and information from other government departments. When numbers do not line up, the system flags the return for review long before a human looks at it.
The most common mismatch is import values. Customs records every shipment into the UAE with values in AED. If your return shows imports of AED 200,000 for a quarter but customs shows AED 350,000, expect a query. The fix is boring but effective: reconcile customs declarations to your purchase ledger every quarter before you file, not after the notice arrives.
Turnover consistency matters too. Your VAT returns for a full year should broadly reconcile with the revenue figure on your corporate tax return and your audited financials. Small timing differences are normal and explainable. Large unexplained gaps are not. Keep a simple annual reconciliation schedule, one page, showing how the VAT return totals tie to the financial statements. Auditors love it, and it takes an hour to prepare once your books are clean.
Refund positions get extra attention. If your return shows a net refund due, the FTA reviews it before paying out, which can delay the refund by weeks. Make sure every input VAT claim in a refund return is backed by a valid tax invoice with a correct supplier TRN. One bad invoice in a refund claim can hold up the entire amount while the FTA investigates.
Amendments
Fixing a return you already filed
Found an error after submitting? You cannot simply re-file the return. The FTA provides two paths depending on the size and nature of the error. For smaller corrections, use the adjustments boxes in your next return, this handles items like a missed purchase invoice or a small credit note cleanly.
For material errors, use voluntary disclosure on EmaraTax. This is a formal correction process where you declare what was wrong, what the correct figure is, and pay any additional VAT due. The key advantage is penalty treatment: voluntarily disclosed errors attract significantly lower penalties than errors the FTA discovers through audit. Disclose in the next period if possible, the longer you wait, the worse the penalty position gets.
Never try to quietly fix a filed return by adjusting the next return's boxes for a large error. If the FTA spots the pattern, it looks like concealment rather than correction, and the penalty position becomes much worse. When in doubt about which path applies, ask your tax advisor before you act. Our VAT team handles disclosures regularly and can tell you in one call which route fits.
VAT Return Filing in UAE FAQs
Questions about vat return filing in uae
What is the UAE VAT return deadline?
Both the return and the payment are due within 28 days of the end of your tax period. Most businesses file quarterly; those with turnover above AED 150 million file monthly.
Do I need to file if I had no sales?
Yes. A nil return must be filed by the deadline. Not filing counts as late filing and carries the same AED 1,000 first-offence penalty.
What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt on the return?
Zero-rated supplies go in their own box with nil VAT but full input VAT recovery. Exempt supplies go in the exempt box and block input VAT recovery on related costs. Mixing them up is a common and costly error.
How do I report imported services?
Through the reverse charge mechanism. You declare the VAT as output and claim it back as input in the same return, provided you hold a valid invoice and the expense relates to taxable supplies.
Can I correct a VAT return after submitting it?
You cannot re-file. Corrections go through voluntary disclosure on EmaraTax, or through the adjustments boxes in a later return for smaller items. Disclose errors promptly, penalties are lower for voluntary correction.
What records support my return figures?
Tax invoices, credit notes, import documents, and bank records, kept for at least 5 years. Every figure on the return should trace back to source documents an auditor can follow.
