How to Improve Your ICV Score

Your ICV score is not luck, and it is not negotiated at the certifier's desk. It is arithmetic built from your audited financials and supporting schedules. That means most improvements come from better records and deliberate spending choices made during the year, not from last-minute scrambling. Here are seven practical levers that actually move the number.

Records firstThe score is evidence-based. Clean books are the fastest lever you have.

The essentials

Seven levers that move the number

Ordered by effort: quick record wins first, structural shifts after.

1

Fix supplier coding first

The quickest win in ICV. UAE vendors miscoded as foreign score zero until someone corrects the master data. One clean-up pass before scorecard season can recover points you already earned. Check country codes, trade licence locations and billing addresses.

2

Shift spend to UAE-based suppliers

Where quality and price allow, move purchases to local vendors. This is usually the largest score input, so even a partial shift shows up. Document the change properly: the certifier scores invoices and schedules, not intentions.

3

Grow UAE-based headcount

Salaries paid to UAE-based employees count toward the score. Hiring locally and keeping clean WPS payroll evidence feeds the manpower input directly. Our payroll services team keeps these records audit-ready.

4

Invest in UAE assets

Plant, equipment, office fit-outs and facilities inside the UAE count toward the investment input. Time major capex so it falls inside the certified financial year, and keep the fixed asset register immaculate.

5

Reconcile payroll to the books

If WPS totals and the payroll ledger disagree, the certifier discounts the input. Monthly reconciliation between HR records, WPS filings and the general ledger turns a common query into a non-issue.

6

Keep purchase schedules clean year-round

Do not reconstruct a year of supplier spend in a panic. Monthly purchase schedules by supplier location, tied to the ledger, make scorecard building routine. This is where disciplined monthly bookkeeping pays for itself.

7

Time certification with your audit cycle

Validity runs about 14 months from the audited statements issuance date. Certifying right after the audit maximises the window. Certifying on stale statements wastes months of validity you paid to prepare for.

Every lever above works through evidence. If it is not in your records, it does not score.

Worth knowing

What does not help

A quick reality check before you spend money chasing points. The score is calculated from verified financial records, so anything that does not change those records does not change the score.

  • Reworded invoices. Changing descriptions without changing the underlying spend or supplier location scores nothing.
  • One-off purchases timed for show. The certifier looks at the full financial year, not a good month.
  • Projections about next year. Promises of future localisation do not score. Only recorded history does.
  • Paying for points. No legitimate certifier sells a higher score. Anyone offering one is selling trouble.

Make it happen

The 90-day action plan

A realistic runway before your next certification.

Three months to a stronger file

  • Month 1: fix the records. Audit supplier master data and correct country coding. Reconcile payroll to WPS and the ledger.
  • Month 2: shift the spend. Review upcoming renewals and move what you sensibly can to UAE-based suppliers.
  • Month 3: draft the scorecard. Build a draft from management accounts, so the certified version holds no surprises.
  • Then certify. With the file already assembled, verification with the approved certifying body is a formality, not a fire drill. New to the process? Read our complete ICV certificate guide first.

FAQs

ICV score, answered

How long does it take to improve an ICV score?

Record fixes such as supplier coding can lift your score within weeks. Real spending shifts, like moving procurement to local suppliers or hiring locally, need a financial year to show up fully, because the score is built from a full year of audited figures. Start the record work now and run the spending plan alongside it.

Does hiring more staff always raise the score?

UAE-based payroll counts toward the score, so genuine local hiring helps. But inflated headcount or reclassified contractors without real substance create verification problems with the certifier. Hire for business reasons, keep the WPS evidence clean, and let the score follow.

Can I choose which financial year the score is based on?

The scorecard ties to your audited financial statements, so it reflects your most recent audited year. That is why timing matters: certify soon after the audit and your score reflects your latest improvements, with the longest validity window.

Do free zone companies get ICV scores?

Yes. Free zone companies can be certified just like mainland companies. The methodology looks at UAE-based spend regardless of where the licence was issued. If your buyers score ICV, being in a free zone does not remove the need for one.

What if my score drops year on year?

Scores move with spending patterns. A year of heavy foreign procurement or a smaller local team will pull it down. A year-on-year comparison in your scorecard review shows exactly which input moved, so you know where to focus before the next certification.

Should I prepare for ICV myself or get help?

If your books are clean and every schedule reconciles, the process is manageable in-house. Most companies struggle with the preparation: supplier mapping, payroll tie-outs and assembling the certification file. That preparation is what BizNex handles, so the certifier sees a complete file the first time.
