Chart of Accounts
Ledgers built around your business and mapped to how UAE VAT returns are worked, not a generic default chart.
Tally Prime, configured for the UAE
Setup and honest advice for Tally users in the Emirates: VAT-ready configuration with your TRN on every invoice, multi-user setup, and a clean migration path to Zoho Books or Xero if you outgrow desktop. Configured by accountants who file UAE VAT returns.
The honest answer
It depends on your team, not on the software.
Tally is one of the most used accounting packages in the world, and in the UAE it shows up most often in Indian-owned SMEs whose accountants learned it back home. It is fast, it works offline, and it carries no monthly subscription. A single-user company that issues straightforward invoices can run on it happily for years.
It is also built for India first. The tax presets, invoice formats and report layouts ship with GST assumptions, and none of that is UAE VAT until someone configures it. Most Tally problems we see in the UAE are not Tally problems at all: they are GST-style setups never reconfigured for the Emirates.
So here is the honest answer. Tally is good for a UAE business when your team already runs on it and the VAT configuration is done properly: TRN on invoices, 5% tax ledgers, clean masters. It is a poor choice when you need remote access, automatic bank feeds, or several people working in the books at once. That is when cloud wins.
Compare the full picture in our accounting software in the UAE guide before you commit either way.
VAT configuration
Tally can be fully VAT-ready. It just does not arrive that way.
We build the invoice format around your TRN, with VAT shown separately on each line, so every tax invoice meets the requirement.
Sales and purchase VAT ledgers set to 5%, with correct coding for standard-rated, zero-rated and exempt supplies.
Tax invoices must be issued within 14 days of supply. We set the daily flow so nothing slips past the deadline.
Masters, ledgers and invoices organised so an FTA review is a file hand-over, not a panic.
The configuration is done by accountants who file UAE VAT returns, not by software sellers. We are not a Tally reseller: our service is the setup and the accounting around it, so the VAT you report ties back to the books line by line.
Pair the setup with VAT services and your registration, workings and filings stay consistent in one place.
Setup scope
A proper Tally setup is a day of careful configuration, not a ten-minute install.
Ledgers built around your business and mapped to how UAE VAT returns are worked, not a generic default chart.
5% VAT ledgers, TRN invoice format, and tax coding for zero-rated and exempt supplies, set once and verified.
Multi-user setup with roles, so the cashier cannot edit last year's ledger and every change has an owner.
Opening balances and master lists moved in cleanly from Excel or your old books, reconciled to the last period.
Scheduled backups and access discipline, because on desktop the data lives with you, and so does the risk.
Your team learns the daily flow: invoices, receipts, bank entries and the reports they should read every week.
We do the setup, the books and the ongoing accounting. Where the rules require a registered representative, regulated tax work goes through our FTA-registered tax partners.
Stay or migrate
Honest advice, not a push to the most expensive platform.
| Factor | Stay on Tally | Move to cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Your team | Already fluent in Tally, no retraining needed | New staff, accountants who prefer cloud tools |
| Access | Desktop, one office, works offline | Browser access from anywhere, remote teams |
| Cost | One-time license, no monthly fee | Monthly subscription per user |
| Bank reconciliation | Manual statement imports | Automatic bank feeds |
| Collaboration | Multi-user needs server setup | Built-in multi-user and approvals |
General comparison for a typical UAE SME, not a product review.
If Tally fits your team, the right move is a proper VAT setup, not a migration. We keep you on Tally and configure it correctly. If the business has outgrown desktop, our Zoho Books implementation playbook covers VAT-ready setup, data migration, staff training and ongoing support, so the switch pays for itself in saved reconciliation time.

Migration
A clean cutover date and no surprises.
Masters, chart of accounts and trial balance exported from Tally. Duplicates and dead ledgers are removed before anything moves.
Carried into the new system as of a fixed cutover date, reconciled to the last filed period so nothing is double counted.
Customer and vendor masters, items, the chart of accounts and opening balances. Your Tally file stays as the archive.
Invoice formats, approval workflows, VAT workings automation and bank rules. Cloud reports are rebuilt, not copied.
Line-by-line transaction history usually exports as reports rather than migrating as live data. That is fine: what matters is that balances tie to the last filed return and the new system starts clean. Every setup is reviewed by founder Mubashir Rao, CPA (Canada) and MBA Finance, with 14+ years in Dubai finance.

Tally FAQs
Yes, for the right business. If your team already runs on Tally and it is configured for UAE VAT (TRN invoicing, 5% tax ledgers), it is a solid desktop workhorse. It struggles when you need remote access, automatic bank feeds, or multi-user collaboration. That is the point to consider cloud options like Zoho Books or Xero.
Tally Prime supports VAT setups, but the configuration does not arrive ready for the UAE. Tax ledgers must be set to 5%, invoice formats must show your TRN, and supplies must be coded correctly. That configuration is the service we provide.
Yes. Once configured, Tally prints tax invoices carrying your TRN with VAT shown separately. We build the invoice format around your TRN so every invoice meets the requirement, and we keep issuance within the 14-day rule.
Only if the business has outgrown desktop. The signs: several users needing access, remote working, or reconciliation eating hours every month. If Tally still fits, the cheaper and faster move is a proper VAT setup, not a migration. If you do decide to move, see our Xero accounting services in Dubai or Zoho Books services in Dubai.
