The essentials

Registration in 60 seconds

Corporate tax applies in the UAE to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. The rate is 0% on taxable profit up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that. Registration with the FTA on the EmaraTax portal is mandatory for taxable persons, it is separate from VAT registration, and late registration risks an AED 10,000 penalty. New companies should register within three months of licensing.

That paragraph covers the essentials. The rest of this guide covers the detail: exactly who counts as a taxable person, how deadlines work, the documents you will need, the process itself, and the situations that need extra care.

Who is in scope

Who must register

Juridical persons: companies incorporated in the UAE, including mainland LLCs, free zone entities and branches of foreign companies. All must register, including free zone companies seeking Qualifying Free Zone Person status.

Natural persons: individuals conducting business or business activity in the UAE must register once annual business revenue exceeds AED 1 million. Salary income alone does not trigger this, it is business revenue that counts.

Exempt: government entities, certain government-controlled entities, and other persons specifically exempted under the law. Exemption is narrow, when in doubt, check rather than assume.

The AED 375,000 threshold confuses people: it sets the 0% tax band, not the registration obligation. A company with AED 100,000 profit still registers, it simply pays 0%.

When

Deadlines at a glance

The FTA published registration deadlines in 2024, staggered by licence issue date. Businesses licensed before 2024 that never registered are now overdue. New companies work to the rolling rule: register within three months of the licence issue date.

Do not confuse the registration deadline with the filing deadline. Registration is the one-time setup; the corporate tax return is then due within nine months of each financial year end. Both have penalties, and they stack.

How

The registration process

Registration runs on the FTA's EmaraTax portal, accessed with UAE PASS. You complete the entity profile, declare your financial year, provide ownership and activity details, upload supporting documents, review carefully and submit. The FTA processes the application and issues your corporate tax registration number.

Preparation matters more than the portal steps. Have your licence documents, Emirates ID, UAE PASS access, a decided financial year and working contact details ready before you begin. The review screen before submission deserves your slowest, most careful reading: name, licence number and financial year errors are the ones that resurface months later.

Special situations

Cases that need extra care

Qualifying Free Zone Persons: must register, then meet the qualifying conditions each year to keep the 0% rate on qualifying income. The conditions include adequate substance and audited financials. Registration first, qualification maintained after.

Small Business Relief: businesses with revenue up to AED 3 million can elect relief (0% tax) while it applies. The election and the conditions need checking each tax year, it is not automatic.

Tax groups: related UAE companies can form a tax group with a parent filing position. Group formation has its own conditions and timing, get advice before assuming you qualify.

Natural persons near the AED 1 million line: track business revenue monthly. Crossing the threshold starts obligations, and the FTA will not remind you.

Deregistration: when a business closes or leaves scope, deregister properly on EmaraTax. Orphan registrations create filing obligations that continue until formally closed.

After registration

What registration does not do

Registration is the doorway, not the house. It does not file your returns, maintain your books, elect your reliefs or track your deadlines. From registration onward you need monthly bookkeeping, a diary of filing dates (nine months after each year end), annual relief reviews and current EmaraTax details.

This is where most businesses quietly fall behind: registered, then nothing happens for a year, then the filing deadline arrives with no books to file from. Our corporate tax service exists to prevent exactly that, monthly books through to filed returns.

A practical habit that helps: set a quarterly fifteen-minute review of your tax position. Check that the books are current, that no licence details changed without updating EmaraTax, and that the next filing date is still correctly diarised. Fifteen minutes four times a year prevents the vast majority of compliance surprises.

Complete guide questions

Questions, answered

Do I need to register if I already have a VAT TRN?

Yes. VAT and corporate tax registrations are entirely separate on EmaraTax. Many businesses hold one but not the other, check your dashboard to confirm.

What documents do I need for corporate tax registration?

Trade licence, memorandum of association, Emirates ID of the authorised signatory, UAE PASS access, and your decided financial year. Establishment cards and ownership details where applicable.

How much does corporate tax registration cost?

The FTA charges no registration fee. Professional preparation fees vary, many businesses use an adviser to get the financial year and entity details right first time.

What if my company made no profit, do I still register and file?

Yes. Registration applies regardless of profitability, and returns are generally still required. Zero-profit years still need their filing position handled properly.

Can one EmaraTax account handle multiple companies?

Each taxable person registers separately, though a single user login can manage multiple entities. Keep each entity's details and filings distinct.

What happens after I get my corporate tax number?

Maintain books from day one of your first tax period, diary your filing deadline (nine months after year end), review Small Business Relief eligibility yearly, and keep your EmaraTax details current.

Should I use an adviser for registration?

The portal is usable directly, but the financial year decision, entity classification and document consistency are where mistakes happen. A review before submission is cheap insurance, our Free Finance Review covers it.
