How to Register for Corporate Tax in the UAE
Registering for UAE corporate tax is a one-time task that sets up every filing you will ever do. This guide walks the whole journey: checking whether you must register, preparing properly, completing the EmaraTax process, and what happens after your tax number arrives.
Figures last verified: 16 October 2026.
Step zero
Do you actually need to register?
Before touching the portal, confirm registration applies to you. Most UAE businesses do need to register, including many that assume they are exempt.
Companies and juridical persons: yes, register. This includes mainland LLCs, free zone companies and branches. Free zone companies aiming for Qualifying Free Zone Person status must still register, the 0% rate is claimed through registration, not instead of it.
Natural persons: register once your annual revenue from business activity exceeds AED 1 million. Below that line, no registration is required, but track the number, crossing it mid-year starts the clock.
Exempt persons: government entities, government-controlled entities in specific cases, and certain others listed in the law are exempt. If you think you are exempt, verify against the actual legislation or ask a tax adviser rather than assuming.

Before you click anything
Prepare properly first
Most registration delays come from poor preparation, not from the portal itself. Gather these before you start:
Trade licence and establishment documents. Current licence, memorandum of association, and establishment card where applicable. Names and numbers must match your licence exactly.
Emirates ID and UAE PASS. The authorised signatory logs in with UAE PASS. If your UAE PASS is not active, sort that first, it is the most common avoidable delay.
Financial year decision. You will declare your financial year during registration. Most companies use the calendar year (January to December), but your first tax period needs thought if you incorporated mid-year. Getting this right at registration saves painful corrections later.
Contact details that work. Use an email and phone number you actually monitor. FTA correspondence about your registration goes here, and missed messages cause missed deadlines.
Ownership and activity details. Shareholder information, business activities as per the licence, and accounting basis. Have these written down before the form asks for them.
The process
Registration in outline
Registration happens on the FTA's EmaraTax portal. In outline: log in with UAE PASS, select corporate tax registration, complete the entity details, enter your financial year and accounting information, upload the supporting documents, review everything carefully, and submit. The FTA then processes the application and issues your corporate tax registration number.
For the detailed click-by-click walkthrough with the full documents checklist, see our companion guide: Corporate Tax Registration on EmaraTax (Step by Step). Read this page first to understand what you are doing and why, then use that guide inside the portal.
The single most important moment is the review screen before submission. Errors in the legal name, licence number or financial year are the issues that come back to haunt businesses months later. Slow down there.
After you submit
What happens after registration
Approval gives you a corporate tax registration number (TRN for corporate tax, separate from any VAT TRN). That number goes on your records, and some businesses add it to invoices and official documents.
Then the real work begins. Registration does not file anything for you. Your obligations from here:
Keep proper books. From day one of your first tax period. The FTA can ask for records going back years, and reconstructing them later costs far more than maintaining them monthly.
Know your first filing deadline. Returns are due within nine months of your financial year end. Diary it now, while it is fresh.
Review relief eligibility yearly. Small Business Relief (revenue up to AED 3 million, 0% tax) must be elected and conditions checked each year. Do not assume it rolls over automatically.
Keep EmaraTax details current. Licence renewals, activity changes, address changes, update the portal to match. Mismatches surface during filings and queries.
Avoid these
Mistakes that cost businesses
Waiting until the filing deadline to register. Registration and filing are separate obligations with separate deadlines. Register first, then prepare the return.
Wrong financial year. Picking a year-end that does not match your actual accounting creates a misaligned first period and filing confusion. Decide deliberately at registration.
Assuming the accountant did it. Ask for the registration confirmation and check your EmaraTax dashboard yourself. "I thought it was handled" is the most expensive sentence in UAE tax compliance.
Ignoring the confirmation email. The FTA may request additional documents after submission. Watch the inbox you registered with until approval is confirmed.
Registering under the wrong entity type. The portal asks you to classify your entity. A mainland LLC, a free zone company and a branch do not all answer this the same way, and the wrong choice creates a registration that does not match your licence. When in doubt, match the classification to your trade licence exactly.
Our corporate tax service handles registration plus everything after it: monthly books, relief elections, return preparation and filing.
Registration questions
Questions, answered
Who needs to register for corporate tax in the UAE?
Most businesses: mainland and free zone companies, branches, and natural persons whose business revenue exceeds AED 1 million per year. Free zone companies must register even to claim the 0% Qualifying Free Zone Person rate.
How long does corporate tax registration take?
The portal submission itself is quick once documents are ready. FTA approval time varies with their queue and whether your documents are complete and consistent. Clean, matching paperwork moves fastest.
Is corporate tax registration free?
The FTA does not charge a registration fee. Costs only arise if you engage an adviser to prepare it, which many businesses do to get the financial year and details right first time.
Can I register before my licence is issued?
No, you need the licence details to complete registration. New companies should register within three months of the licence issue date.
What is the difference between this guide and the EmaraTax walkthrough?
This guide covers the whole journey: eligibility, preparation, the process in outline, and life after registration. Our EmaraTax walkthrough is the detailed portal companion for the clicks themselves. Read this first, then use that inside the portal.
Do I need to register if my profit is below AED 375,000?
Yes, registration is still required. The AED 375,000 figure is the 0% tax threshold, not a registration threshold. You register, then pay 0% on the first AED 375,000 of taxable profit.
