How to Choose an Accountant in Dubai: 12 Questions to Ask

The wrong accountant costs you twice: once in fees, and once in penalties and clean-up work. These twelve questions — asked before you sign anything — separate firms that keep you compliant from firms that just file and forget.

Before the meeting

Know what you're actually buying

“Accountant” covers three different services in Dubai: monthly bookkeeping (recording and reconciling), accounting and reporting (statements, VAT and corporate-tax workings), and regulated tax representation before the FTA (which requires a registered tax agent — we work with registered UAE tax partners for that part). Decide which of the three you need before you start interviewing, or you'll compare proposals that aren't comparable.

Interview two or three firms, ask every one the same twelve questions, and score the answers side by side — a simple one-page scorecard beats memory every time. Pay special attention to how they answer question 3 (missed deadlines) and question 8 (inclusions): those two answers predict the entire working relationship.

Compliance & experience

  • How many UAE corporate-tax registrations and filings have you handled? You want a number, not a smile.
  • Do you work with businesses in my free zone / sector? DMCC, IFZA and JAFZA each have quirks — generic answers are a warning sign.
  • If a filing deadline is missed, who bears the penalty? Get the answer in writing. Evasion here tells you everything.
  • Are you a registered tax agent, or do you partner with one? Regulated FTA representation needs one; preparation doesn't. Know which you're getting.
9–12

Commercial terms

  • How is the fee structured — and what triggers extra charges? Retainer caps, overage rates and catch-up pricing, all in writing.
  • What are the contract length and exit terms? Short notice periods and clean handovers signal confidence.
  • Can I speak to two current clients? Not testimonials on a website — actual conversations.
  • What exactly do I receive at year-end? A trial balance is not a year-end pack. Ask for the list.

Worked example

Scoring two proposals

Illustrative example: the “cheap” quote that wasn't

A Dubai e-commerce business with 200 monthly transactions gets two proposals. Firm A: AED 1,500/month — but the engagement letter caps transactions at 100 (overage unstated), excludes VAT filing, and says nothing about who bears penalty risk. Firm B: AED 2,200/month — 300 transactions included, quarterly VAT workings and filing inside the fee, named senior reviewer, 10-day month-end turnaround in writing.

At real volumes, Firm A bills roughly AED 1,500 + overage + AED 400–500 per VAT filing quarter — landing near AED 2,300/month with worse terms and no penalty accountability. The “expensive” firm was cheaper from month two. Score proposals on the 12 questions, not the headline number — and read our Dubai pricing guide before you compare.

Figures above are illustrative, to show how caps and exclusions change the real cost — always get itemised quotes in writing.

Walk away if you see these

5 red flags

  • They quote without asking about your business. No questions about transactions, VAT or headcount means no real scoping — just a number designed to win.
  • “We handle VAT” with no registration discussion. If they haven't asked whether you're registered or near the AED 375,000 threshold, they aren't handling anything.
  • No written engagement letter. A serious firm documents scope, fees and timelines before starting. Informality here becomes disputes later.
  • They can't explain Small Business Relief simply. If they fumble the AED 3 million relief basics, they won't handle your CT position well.
  • They ask you to sign blank or pre-filled FTA forms. Never sign what you haven't read. A professional prepares, explains, then asks for signature.

The 12 questions get you a good firm. These milestones prove you got one.

If these milestones slip, raise it in week five — not month five. Good firms welcome the accountability; it's how the relationship stays sharp.

Hiring FAQs

Choosing an accountant questions

Should I hire a freelance accountant or a firm?

A freelancer can suit very small, simple businesses — but ask what happens during leave, illness or a deadline crunch. A firm gives you continuity, review layers and broader coverage (bookkeeping, VAT, payroll). Match the choice to your complexity, not just your budget.

What should the engagement letter include?

Full scope of services, transaction caps and overage rates, turnaround commitments, fee and payment terms, data and software ownership, confidentiality, and notice period for termination. Read it before signing — never sign blank or pre-filled government forms.

How do I switch accountants cleanly?

Give proper notice, then collect: your complete ledger export, all supporting documents, accounting software access transferred to you, and a calendar of upcoming VAT and corporate-tax deadlines. A professional incoming firm will give you this handover checklist up front.

Do I need a UAE-registered tax agent?

Only for regulated representation before the FTA — for example, formal filings or disputes handled on your behalf. Day-to-day bookkeeping and preparing workings and schedules doesn't require one. We prepare everything compliance-ready and work with registered UAE tax partners where regulated representation is needed.

How much should I budget for an accountant in Dubai?

It depends on transaction volume, VAT status and headcount — get itemised quotes and compare scopes, not headlines. As one reference point, BizNex monthly packages start at AED 2,000. Our pricing guide explains what drives quotes up or down.

What if my accountant misses a deadline?

Ask before you sign who bears the penalty risk — and get it in writing. A firm confident in its deadline controls will answer directly. Vague answers to this question are themselves an answer.
